Finland’s oldest Michelin‑starred restaurant, Demo, sets its sights on a second star in a world‑class setting at the top of We Land

When Demo’s restaurateur Tommi Tuominen was offered the chance to “lift Demo to the top of the city,” he decided to seize the moment. Demo now has a strong ambition and passion to pursue additional Michelin stars, and its stunning new surroundings support that goal exceptionally well.
In 2003, two friends founded the restaurant in Helsinki’s Punavuori district.
In 2007, Demo was awarded a Michelin star for its quality, originality and craftsmanship — a star it has retained to this day.
And in 2025, the restaurant is reaching for a second star from its new, spectacular location above the rooftops of Helsinki, at the top of We Land in Ruoholahti.
“For the first time, I’ve been able to fulfill the dream of a restaurateur and chef — to design and build a restaurant from the drawing board exactly the way I want it. The end result is simply stunning,” says Demo’s restaurateur, Tommi Tuominen.
With approximately 45 seats, the fully public Demo serves lunch on weekdays and dinner from Monday to Saturday. Its culinary philosophy is rooted in high quality, seasonal ingredients from local producers, and a continuously evolving kitchen.
“In a world‑class setting, the atmosphere feels a little different”
Demo is Finland’s oldest Michelin‑starred restaurant. Its brand is strong, but it had become tied to a small, worn‑out space on Uudenmaankatu. Eventually, the old premises reached their limit, development stalled, and Demo wanted to move forward.
“When choosing new premises, the most important thing for us was that they offered something a bit different — something not typically seen in Helsinki. We’ve always gone slightly against the mainstream. And now that everyone else is over there, we decided to come to Ruoholahti,” Tuominen explains.
“So here we are — in a completely different kind of space, running a restaurant in a world‑class environment. And the atmosphere is definitely something else,” Tuominen reflects.
“Our comfort and well‑being at work have improved dramatically. The staff facilities feel like pure luxury compared to what we had before. Having multiple showers, drying cabinets and individual lockers — that’s everyday luxury for us,” Tuominen laughs.
Demo crowns the unique concept of We Land
We Land breaks the traditional idea of an office building by functioning as an open‑house destination. It is an open and multifaceted workplace community that is alive from morning to evening — offering spaces, events and restaurant services also to people beyond its tenants.
At the heart of the service concept is the concierge service Charlie — a hospitality professional bringing hotel‑level service to the lobby, handling tenants’ daily needs smoothly and stylishly in both Finnish and English. The Charlie service is complemented by the We Land app, which brings all services together in one convenient view on tenants’ phones.
“What attracted Demo to the We Land concept was the sense of community — the idea that all tenants actively take part in the activities of the building. That naturally supports what we’re doing as well,” Tuominen says.
“What truly crowns the We Land concept is that, in addition to the comprehensive services, we have a Michelin‑starred fine dining restaurant on the top floor. Demo is like the cherry on the cake,” says Uku Jaatinen, Sales Director at NCC Property Development.
At NCC, the customer is always at the center
“The partnership with Demo is a great example of how NCC can offer its clients more than just square meters — it provides opportunities for renewal, growth and success. NCC listens, understands and turns clients’ wishes into reality,” Jaatinen says.
The top floor of We Land is now something entirely different from a traditional commercial space — it is exactly what Demo needed. The collaboration has resulted in a unique whole where a top‑level restaurant concept and exceptional surroundings support each other seamlessly.
“I highly recommend NCC as a workplace partner. The cooperation has been excellent from day one. Our needs, wishes and ideas have all been taken into account exceptionally well,” Tuominen concludes.
