The cornerstone of We Land office building to be completed in spring 2024 in the Rumbanaukio Square was laid at a remote ceremony due to the pandemic situation. The traditional cornerstone ceremony was opened by Deputy Mayor of City of Helsinki, responsible for Urban Environment. We Land is a present-era showcase of office construction.

So far, the construction of We Land has been underway 10 metres below the sea level, but the actual 14-storey building starts to rise next at a brisk tempo. The building’s façade is accentuated by large windows and copper cladding which is built from fully recycled copper.

– This project brings lots of new workplaces to Helsinki at a good location and in an easily accessible spot next to the metro station and tram connections. Once completed, the building will offer new services and pedestrian connections to those visiting the area. Even more excellently, the building is built in a sustainable way, says Deputy Mayor Anni Sinnemäki of City of Helsinki who is responsible for Urban Environment.

The sustainable We Land to be built to BREEAM Outstanding level and render individual service to the tenant companies’ personnel showcases what is most important to our era.

– It has been clear from the start that applying for the highest possible environmental rating is among the prerogatives of our era and that the space and the service must live up to the high expectations that the companies have for their headquarters. We have paid special attention to supporting the tenant personnel’s daily demands with concierge-level services. At the same time we can have a high-quality restaurant hub in Ruoholahti to treat all city dwellers to a 14th floor seaside view, Property Developer Heikki Alén says.

What does laying of cornerstone mean?

The cornerstone ceremony is a traditional and symbolic occasion held by the builder to mark the commencement of the construction works in a project. Together with the laying of the cornerstone, history will be made by leaving a note in the foundation to the future generations to reflect the current state of the world. In practice, the construction works have been started a lot earlier with foundation construction and earthworks. However, the cornerstone is laid in connection with the actual commencement of the construction work when the foundations are already being built. Shortly after this, the building’s façade starts to rise quite visibly.
